May 1 – More gawking

Yesterday was one of the first sunny and hot days we’ve had in a long time. I was walking around the old town when I saw an overly tanned and leathery woman wearing thin and tight white pants with full black underwear. It wasn’t even a thong!

To continue with things that shock the eye, I went to a Dutch party last night and the dress code was orange, their national colour. Everything was orange. The party was to celebrate the Queen’s Birthday, which is really a big event in Holland, but, as you can see, us exchange students have parties for anything haha. It was a lot of fun, and my first time partying in a bomb shelter. All public buildings in Switzerland have bomb shelters and a certain % of the population is armed at home and is, theoretically, ready to be mobilized. This was a really strange thing to find out about Switzerland, although I first heard about it a while ago. The university here has bomb shelters, too.

Today was really nice outside too, so Henrik and I walked up to the 3 ponds and just sat around for a while. The view was really great – you could see all the way to Lake Constance. It would have been perfect for a day trip somewhere too, but last night was a late one and I’ve realized that I’m so over budget that I have to cut my spending in half for the next 2 months.

This is a good time to tell you guys about what the rest of the world pays for tuition. Most of the European students I’ve met don’t pay any tuition. Some of them are just beginning to have to pay tuition, at a rate of about $1000 per year. Matthias told me that, in Sweden, they get paid to go to university. They get an “allowance” every month that they’re enrolled in university. My only consolation at this point is that I’m not studying in the States, where some people pay $30k-$40k+ per year.
